You chose courage. You chose bravery. As the moon rose over the surrounding peaks, the clock kept ticking. You kept going. The ascents continued, headlamps cutting through the swath of darkness that has descended on the mountain. This is the stuff legends are made of.
The lodge is quiet and still – an oasis for a quick reprieve. Tired bodies and sore legs settle in wherever an empty couch waits. This is rest, when walking down to the tents seems like too much of a chore.
The silence breaks with an errant alarm. Another tired soul wakes, gets up off the couch, and chooses to continue onwards and upwards. One. Step. At. A. Time.
Volunteers and event staff bestow a gift upon those starting their final lap: the Red Bib. Many a participant has said the Red Bib gives a newfound energy – after all, you’ve already climbed the mountain 12 times, what’s once more?
As the clock continues into the morning of day 2, more and more participants get the chance to feel that electric energy. More and more are pulling on that Red Bib and are starting their final ascent.
It’s been a long time since the start of your experience on the mountain. It’s time to lean on this mental trick shared by co-founder, Colin O’Brady, at the start line.
Don’t say you have to do another lap up the mountain – say you get to. It’s a subtle distinction, but one that makes a world of difference as you continue. You chose to be here. Chose to make the time. Chose to put in the training, even when life got busy. Now it’s time to reap the reward.
You might need a break, but the clock doesn’t stop running. Recovery is important, but so is continuing onwards and upwards, towards 29029 feet. Take a break. Recover. Recharge. But only for 20 minutes. You need to keep going. You can't stop now.
We all have it – deep down, an untapped potential just waiting to be let out. For some, it’s harder to tap into. Some have spent years not believing. But 29029 is where it breaks out. Years, sometimes even decades, of putting ourselves into a box can be broken in a mere 36 hours.
You are strong beyond measure. Your experience at 29029 is just another metaphor for life. You’ve conquered the mountain at Utah. Take what you’ve learned and use it. Your experience here is proof that you can reach the summit of your dreams.
You’ve conquered a mountain. What will you conquer next?
