In March of 2021, as we loaded up to drive to Colorado’s mountains, Carson was in rough shape. The cancer had spread to every bone in his body, and his kidneys were starting to fail.
But that wouldn’t stop Carson from getting the mountain experience he wanted.
I had called the ski resort ahead of time, explaining a bit of Carson’s story, and asked to book the biggest and strongest instructor they had. Carson was so weak that simply standing for too long would be a challenge, so he was going to need a lot of help on the mountain.
“They don’t need to teach Carson to snowboard, they just need to help him get down the mountain so he can experience what it’s like to snowboard” I explained.
Our instructor's name was Big Mark, and he practically carried Carson to the chairlift for our first run. At the top of the mountain, as Big Mark and Carson slowly slid down the slopes, Carson was in awe! His eyes darted around the scenery, taking it all in. He was having a spiritual experience!
A normal run from top to bottom of the ski slope would have taken around 30 minutes. It took us 2 hours: a slow, challenging, and taxing 2 hours.
When we got to the bottom, Carson turned right, getting back into the lift line.
“I want to go again.”
This run wasn’t much faster than the first. It was another challenging trip down the mountain, but Carson still couldn’t get enough.
When we reached the bottom of the second run, our half-day snow lesson with Big Mark came to an end.
Carson turned to me and said, “Mom, I want to go again.”
We turned right, and got back into the lift line.
