Everyone has their reason. It doesn’t matter why. Action is all that matters here - putting one foot in front of the other for the next 36 hours. Everyone is about to embark on an experience on the mountain.
For some, this isn’t new to them. Some have tackled the mountain before: they’ve experienced the community, made friends, forged bonds, branded the ascent board, and even worn the red hat.
To others, this is all new. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t already been part of the community. From virtual group discussions, video chats, phone calls, text messages, and more, this is the culmination: the real-world introduction to a community that wants to help each other summit the mountain.
It’s the reason for all the training. The reason for the early mornings. The reason for the dedication. The reason for the sacrifices. The summit is the reason. 29029 is the reason. It’s a personal challenge like no other.
The reason is being galvanized with every step. Every vertical foot ascended solidifies that reason.
The gondola beckons above. But that’s the easy way, and it’s reserved for the ride down. After making the summit, weary legs can be rested. Briefly.
Beauty comes from suffering. The views at the top are only made more rewarding having traveled there by foot. The views will be even more rewarding when the goal is achieved.
Words of encouragement are offered. Wisdom from someone who knows what the mountain holds. A friendly embrace. Whatever it takes to help.
Blistering hot and glaring down from above, there’s little escape from the sun. Another challenge on the mountain, but it only makes the effort more satisfying. A brief rest in the shade is a welcome reprieve, but never for long. Get back up. Keep moving.
Climbing 29,029 feet will never go quickly, but Summer Solstice sun helps. More sun to ward off the night. More sun to keep the mood high. More sun to help will everyone towards the summit. Again. Again. And again.
Yet, even near the solstice, darkness will start to fall. One more challenge for those stepping up to the mountain. What will the night hold?
